The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, is expected to stay in Kosovo on June 14 and 15, European sources confirmed in Brussels. He will also stay in northern Macedonia on June 15th and then visit Montenegro.
This is Michel’s second tour of the Western Balkans since visiting Serbia, Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina in May.
According to European sources, during his visits to the Balkans, Michel will talk with the leaders of the countries about their relations with the European Union, the situation in the region after the Russian occupation of Ukraine, but also about the joint meeting of EU and Balkan leaders, which is expected to be held in Brussels on 23 June.
The head of the European Council is expected to use this visit to clarify his idea of creating a “European Geopolitical Community”, which he said would unite EU countries and European countries that are not in the bloc, but that share common values.
Michel has previously stated that he has begun consultations with the leaders of the 27 states of the bloc on his idea. Meanwhile, at the June 23 summit, he is expected to discuss with Western Balkan leaders.
The EU-Western Balkans Summit will take place on the same day as the regular two-day EU summit.
Michel also said that he would propose that a special summit of EU leaders and member states be held during the summer, to discuss his proposal for the creation of a “European Geostrategic Community”.
The idea presented by Michel is similar to an idea put forward by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, for the creation of the “European Political Community”.
Michel said that his idea “is in no way intended as a replacement for the enlargement process, nor as an argument for new delays in this process.”
Of the six Western Balkan countries, Montenegro and Serbia are in the most advanced talks on bloc membership. Albania and northern Macedonia are awaiting a date for the start of membership talks, a process that has been blocked by a Bulgarian veto over disputes with northern Macedonia. Meanwhile, Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina have not yet started the process of EU membership
