The European Union (EU) is expected to sanction Russia’s private military group, Wagner, for human rights abuses in conflicts around the world.
EU foreign ministers are expected to approve sanctions against eight individuals from the Wagner Group and three others linked to the group during a meeting on December 13, EU officials said.
The sanctions include a travel ban, the freezing of all assets that individuals have in the EU, but also a ban on the cooperation of any individual from the EU with this sanctioned group.
Western governments have often accused Moscow of using the Wagner Group as a paramilitary force in conflicts in Ukraine, Libya, Syria, Sudan, Mozambique and the Central African Republic.
Russia denies links between the government and the mercenaries, often describing the paramilitary group as advisers or trainers, despite evidence that members of the group were involved in various combat operations.
United Nations (UN) experts also accused the Wagner Group of human rights abuses along with government forces fighting in the Central African Republic.
The Wagner Group is believed to be led by Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin.
Prigozhin has already been sanctioned by the US and the EU.
