The European Commission is expected to support the granting of European Union candidate status to Ukraine next week, despite opposition from Denmark and the Netherlands, Bloomberg reported on June 10, citing anonymous sources.
Bloomberg said people familiar with the matter said the recommendation, which should be debated and then approved by the European Union panel of commissioners, would be made on terms related to the rule of law and anti-corruption laws.
European Commission approval requires agreement with member states, which according to Bloomberg, could pose a problem with Denmark, which has issued a diplomatic note warning that Ukraine has not met enough critiques related to the stability of institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law , human rights and respect for and protection of minorities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on the European Union to offer membership to its country through a shorter procedure, adding that this would be “a strong response” to the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
Bloc leaders are expected to discuss the issue on June 23rd and 24th.
The 27-member European Union has not enlarged for almost a decade due to weak support from key countries. REL
