China has reported the first case of H3N8 bird flu in humans, but health authorities say the risk of human-to-human transmission is low.
The Chinese Ministry of Health stated that a four-year-old boy, who lives in the central province of Henan, was positive with the H3N8 type. The Ministry of Health added that the risk of infection is relatively small.
The boy was hospitalized in early April with fever and other flu symptoms. It is learned that he was directly infected by birds.
The family of the infected boy lives in an area inhabited by wild ducks and raised chickens.
Chinese authorities appeal to people not to approach dead or sick birds and visit the doctor in case of fever or respiratory symptoms.
