Two dead, one missing and one rescued, is the balance of the crash of a helicopter hired by the Greek firefighting forces.
The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon off the coast of the island of Samos in the Eastern Aegean.
According to the Greek Coast Guard, the Mi-8 helicopter, owned by a Ukrainian company, was leased by the Greek government and was working to extinguish a massive fire on the island of Samos.
In circumstances that are still unknown, the helicopter lost altitude while filling the bucket with water and ended up in the sea.
The Romanian pilot of the helicopter told the Greek coast guard that he is unable to say what happened as everything happened in a few seconds and the helicopter crashed into the sea. The 4 crew members got out of the aircraft alive, but in the following minutes, two of them lost their lives, while another one is missing.
Apart from the Romanian pilot, two Moldovan co-pilots and a Greek translator were in the helicopter. At the time of the accident, there was a wind with a force of 60 km/h in the area, while there were 6-force waves in the sea. The rescue operation is still ongoing in the area.
