The international media have published the past of Anthony Albanese, who is expected to be the next Prime Minister of Australia, a story as special as it is incredible.
Until the age of 14, Anthony Albanese did not know the secret of his family. The mother had confessed that the father of Italian origin, Carlo Albanese, had died in a car accident.
But when Anthony entered adolescence, his mother decided to tell him the truth, that in fact she was not married to her father, but had had a brief love story with him, during a trip 15 years ago…

Her brother was holding a concert on the boat, while on board she “caught the eye” of a handsome young man named Carlo Albanese. A romance began between them that continued and after the ship anchored in Southampton but this adventure of the two young men lasted as long as the voyage.
Months later, Maryanne found out she was pregnant, but Carlo was engaged and she could do nothing. To “protect” herself from the conservative principles of the time, she fabricated a story as if she had married the baby’s Italian father, who later died in an accident, and decided to give birth to the boy, despite suggestions to abort him. Anthony was born on March 2, 1963.
Mother and son settled in Sydney Camperdown.
“They wanted to give me up for adoption, but she insisted a lot. My mother raised me with three major faiths: the Catholic Church, the Labor Party, and the South Sydney Rugby League football club.“, Anthony recalls when he told his story to the local media.
Anthony did not look for his father when he learned of him at the age of 14, as he says it would be disrespectful to his mother. But after Maryanne Albanese died in 2002, he thought it was time to find Nathan (his son) grandfather.
He had only a black and white photo of his parents, shot on the ship, while suspecting his father might be from Naples. There was very little data and the identification of the father seemed impossible.
“It was Thursday, November 5, 2009“, He recalls,”when I got the call that dad was found“. Albanese, then Minister of Infrastructure and Transport recalls that he would chair a meeting of the ministerial council, but from the shock, the only thing he needed was to calm down.
During a trip to Italy six weeks later to meet with the European Commissioner for Transport, Albanese contacted a relative working at the Australian Embassy in Rome to help her draft a letter in Italian. A few months later, he managed to meet his father.
“The door opened, I went inside and hugged him“, Said Albanese tearfully. “It was a very touching moment. I learned I had a brother and a sister. The meeting lasted two or three hours. We sat there and laughed and cried and… it was very exciting“, Albanese confessed to ABC TV.
Carlo Albanese died in January 2014, ‘he was happy we found each other’, as Anthony says.
Albanese could be Australia’s new prime minister. Australians are voting to elect their new representatives to parliament, where they can bring back the Labor opposition after nine years of conservative rule. The race is tight, however polls give the opposition Labor Party leader Anthony Albanese a slight lead, who called on voters to give the country a chance to run.
