A man who was thrown into the River Thames by a bridge in London after confronting police was reported today dead.
The 40-year-old of color was confronted by officers yesterday morning at the Chelsea Bridge.
Police said they had reacted to the report of a man armed with a screwdriver screaming and behaving threateningly.
Officers said the man did not cooperate with them and had challenged them, so they shot him with electric pistols, but this according to them had not helped him arrest him.
The suspect was then thrown into the water, from where he was rescued and taken to hospital. But doctors announced he had died yesterday morning.
Police spokesman Steve Noonan said: “We have spoken to the relatives of the deceased to express our condolences and explain the reasons for our involvement. “Our sympathy is with the family at this difficult time.”
Commander Alexis Boon added: “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family at this difficult time. “We offer our sincere condolences for the tragic loss.”
“Officers go to work to protect the public, and such an incident when a person is injured after contact with the police is certainly worrying.”
“According to reports, the man was armed and shouted loudly on Tuesday at the location. Officers were challenged by him on the Chelsea Bridge. “They had used electric pistols but that did not help them arrest him.”
