The union and the Government of Northern Macedonia reached an agreement on Monday evening to increase the minimum wage from 15,000 (250 euros) to 18,000 denars (300 euros).
The agreement was reached after negotiations that lasted several days due to the Government’s reluctance to accept the increase demanded by the Trade Union League.
The decision will take effect in March and will involve about 80,000 workers in small enterprises, the trade sector and the processing industry.
“We promised and approved the decision that directly helps the standard of living. In a year of crisis, a year of European and world crisis, we remain focused on the financial support of citizens. “Eighty thousand workers will benefit from the decision of the Government”, declared the Macedonian Prime Minister, Dimitar Kovacevski.
Darko Dimovski from the Federation of Trade Unions of Northern Macedonia said that he is satisfied with the decision to raise the minimum wage, but according to him, this will increase all other wages in accordance with the law and the coefficient and collective agreements.
The increase in other salaries was also demanded by the Macedonian opposition party VMRO-DPMNE. The opposition announced that it would submit a proposal for an amendment to the Law on Minimum Wage, which would require other salaries in the public sector to be increased in line with the increase in the minimum wage.
The average salary in Northern Macedonia is around 29,000 denars or 475 euros.
But, against the decision to increase the minimum wage were expressed employers, who asked for subsidies from the government to cover expenses while the government decision was considered unrealistic.
“Increasing the minimum wage is not realistic, it has doubled in the last 4 years and will be a serious blow to the private sector. “This increase will cause problems for some companies and there will be no increase in productivity,” said Nebi Hoxha, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce of Northwest Macedonia.
