A study published in the journal Clinical Virology has found a link between weather and the spread of flu-causing viruses. The data show that the flu breaks out mainly after the first frost of winter. According to experts, the first winter frost, accompanied by low humidity levels and cold temperatures, promotes greater spread of the flu.
They say that the moment the flu epidemic starts, it does not stop even if temperatures rise. A person infected with the flu can easily infect many other people. The flu is also spread through sneezing. When a person sneezes, he releases particles into the air that contain viruses that spread more easily in cold, dry weather.
However, experts say that rhinoviruses, one of the causes of colds, are not only affected by the weather or the cold season. If doctors are able to predict annual epidemics of flu and other viruses, they can inform the public that people are safer. In the Balkan region, the H1N1 virus has killed 72 people and injured hundreds more. The situation seems more alarming in Romania, where so far the virus has claimed the lives of 54 people, but victims have also been registered in Bosnia, Greece and Montenegro. In Albania, doctors have not yet confirmed patients affected by swine flu but the Institute of Public Health has confirmed that the H1N1 virus is also circulating in Albania, so calls for more care.
Cold Weather Is Not The Only One That Boosts The Flu Epidemic
Experts say that viruses that stay long in the air and in the presence of many people cause epidemics. The flu can be easily spread even in places with warm climates. Experts say the drop in temperatures is influential but is not the only factor for the spread of the flu. Doctors on the other hand have their own recommendations for preventing the flu. They advise that at least people with the flu cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing. They should wash their hands often and carry out annual flu shots.
If you get the flu
Use medicines to lower the temperature – Paracetamol when it rises above 38-38.5 ° C. If the temperature lasts for more than 3-5 days, then consult your family doctor. To soothe the cough, use honey milk, sage tea, laurel, linden, etc. and occasionally ventilate the premises. Eat better and with as much meat juice (especially chicken juice), fruits, vegetables, not forgetting the addition of juices.
