Although the day before it made it clear that the US would not send its troops to fight Russian troops, US President Joe Biden told Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy that the United States fully supports Ukraine’s sovereignty, while the military Russian is rallying near the Ukrainian border.
Biden has “reconfirmed his unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the White House said after the two presidents held a telephone conversation that lasted about 90 minutes.
Zelenskiy said Ukraine had “clear proposals” on how to unblock the peace process in the eastern Donbas region, the statement said.
Biden on the other hand showed that the US and its allies and partners are committed to the principle that no decisions and discussions will be made about Ukraine without its involvement.
He reiterated the view that the US and its allies would impose economic sanctions on Russia and increase its assistance in the event of an invasion by Russia.
Biden said this week that the U.S. would take a more direct role in diplomacy to address Russian President Vladimir Putin’s concerns over Ukraine, as part of a broader effort to persuade the Russian leader not to attack its western neighbor.
But experts say any negotiations to resolve the complex issues of East-West rivalry peacefully would be a “minefield” for the US president.
