A drunken teenager who left a man unconscious when he punched her in the street has been acquitted of his death a few days later.
Kelsea O’Hara was 19 when she punched 58-year-old Andrew Turner when he refused to apologize after a street collision with her companion in Bridlington, in the north of England.
Mr Turner fell to the ground after being hit by O’Hara and banging his head on the street while unconscious, and died six days later in hospital.
The court was told that O’Hara, now 20, hit Turner after he did not apologize to her friend, who suffered a scratch on the head from the collision.
But court experts said that although the victim died a few days after the attack, O’Hara was not responsible for his death.
She accepted the attack, and was sentenced to six months in prison with a suspended sentence and a ban on going out in the late hours.
Prosecutor Andrew Espley said Turner had gone out with a friend to a bar in Bridlington where O’Hara and four of her friends were.
“After the start of the confrontation, O’Hara was released in the attack on Turner, shooting him in the face and causing him to lose consciousness when he fell to the ground, when he hit his head.”
Police and ambulance had arrived at the scene but Turner refused to go to the hospital and initially his injuries were not considered life threatening.
O’Hara was arrested and released and made no comment during the interrogation, but was summoned again after Mr Turner’s death.
The Hull court ruled that your death had nothing to do with O’Hara, which was confirmed by a pathologist and a neuro-pathologist.
Sentencing O’Hara, Judge Sophie McKone said: “Mr Turner is dead but the pathologist and neuropathologist made it clear that you have no responsibility for it.”
