The United States has tried to stop Russia from invading Ukraine, saying such a move would result in Western sanctions, increased NATO aid to Kiev, and the deployment of more forces near Moscow.

A senior US administration official has said the United States is ready to engage with Russia in early January on security guarantees.
However, the official reiterated that some of Russia’s demands are unacceptable.
The official said that any dialogue “should be based on reciprocity” and that the West would present its concerns about Russia’s actions.
However, this official did not provide time and location when the talks between the US and Russia could take place.
Earlier in the day, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the meeting would take place in Geneva next month.
During the annual press conference on December 23, Putin asked the West for immediate security guarantees.
