British Foreign Secretary Lizz Truss believes the war in Ukraine could last up to ten years.
The UK foreign minister said in her foreign policy speech to Western allies that Vladimir Putin’s Russia is even less credible than the former Soviet Union.
The Russian leader is a ‘desperate fraudulent operator’ who should not be rewarded for his aggression, Truss commented. Government officials are concerned that Putin could launch attacks on Moldova or Georgia if allowed to retain Ukrainian territory, dragging the conflict for several days. The British chief diplomat warned that if he “succeeds in achieving his goal, there will be further misery confessed throughout Europe and dire consequences across the globe.”
Liz Truss: The war in Ukraine is our war, it is the war of all, because the victory of Ukraine is of strategic importance to all of us. Heavy weapons, tanks, planes, we have to dig deep into our inventories, we have to increase production, we have to do it all together.
Britain and its allies, he continued, must ‘continue to go further and faster to get Russia out of all of Ukraine’. In a clear indication that the battle in this country could drag on, she stressed that “we must be prepared for a long-term war.”
The shocking prediction came as the human cost of the war came to the fore even more from the shocking funeral of a young woman in Ukraine, Valeria, 6-month-old daughter Kira, and her mother, Lyudmila. They were killed by a rocket attack on their apartment in Odessa. The husband, Yuri Glodan was overwhelmed with pain at the funeral ceremony.
Truss insisted that Russia not be given a handful of Ukrainian territory in the peace talks. She argued that the crisis in Ukraine should be the catalyst for a review of the West’s approach to international security.
