The war in Ukraine has significantly increased the cost of living in Germany. German Finance Minister Christian Lindner prepares citizens for a long phase of deprivation.
“There is a risk of a very serious economic crisis due to the strong rise in energy prices, due to problems with supply chains, but also due to inflation,” said German Finance Minister Christian Lindner for the second television German, ZDF. “My concern is that in a few weeks and months we could have a very worrying situation,” said the leader of the German Liberals.
“It’s about three, four or five years of coercion. We have to find an answer to that,” Lindner said. Leaders of the German ruling coalition of the Social Democrats, the Greens and the Liberals are discussing possible steps against rising prices, especially for gas.
There are some days that Germany has reduced gas to Germany. The state of gas supply within the country is tense, according to the Federal Grid Agency. According to unconfirmed media reports, the government is preparing to declare a state of alarm to implement the national emergency plan within a few days. As early as March, the Ministry of Economy announced a state of emergency. The first step of the emergency plan provides for referral to supply deterioration and preparation for countermeasures. Lindner against “taboo ideas”
There are differing views in the German governing coalition on possible measures that could ensure energy supplies to Germany, independent of imports. The SPD and the Greens are against the “fracking” method of extracting gas (method of obtaining gas by pressure and chemicals from the rock layers, St. red.) Also against the extension of the deadline for the three nuclear power plants still in operation in Germany beyond the year 2022.
Liberals under Christian Lindner, on the other hand, do not want to rule out these options. “We can also use our energy supply options,” said Lindner, adding that “we should not have taboo ideas now when it comes to controlling rising prices for people.”
