The World Health Organization’s chief of staff for Europe has raised the alarm over the provision of health care in Ukraine during the war with Russia, calling for more than 200 attacks on health facilities to be investigated.
WHO Europe Director Hans Kluge said one in three patients had difficulty accessing medication and one in five people in the conflict zone needed psychological help, adding that cases of sexual violence were on the rise and that there is a risk of cholera outbreak.
“To date, the WHO has verified 226 attacks on health care in Ukraine. This means that since February 24 there have been three attacks a day. “At least 75 people have been killed and 59 injured in these attacks,” he told a news conference in Kiev.
Describing the situation, he said such attacks are an insult to the commitment and integrity of health workers.
“These attacks are not justifiable, they must be investigated,” he said.
Russia denies attacking civilians or civilian targets in the February 24 invasion of Ukraine, despite ample evidence to the contrary.
