Thousands of farmers gathered today with their tractors in central Holland to protest the government’s long-term measures to reduce the number of their farm animals.
The Hague government has demanded that 30 percent of living things be reduced to reduce nitrogen emissions into the atmosphere.
The Netherlands is the second largest agricultural exporter in Europe, but according to the government is the largest emitter of nitrogen gas, from animal manure and fertilizers.
But farmers say they are being hit unfairly in favor of large industries and will resist plans to close their farms.
Tractors blocked traffic for several kilometers east of Amsterdam as farmers came from all over the country to protest.
“It is not normal what is being done to farmers. “You can not close hundreds of years old farms,” 74-year-old protester Jan Porter told AFP.
Protesters held placards reading “Farmers’ future is being ruined” and “They are scaring us and our children.”
Despite the large numbers of farmers the protest remained peaceful by implementing its qualified program.
Police did not intervene when the farmers’ tractors were driving on the opposite side of the highway passing in front of a police checkpoint, media said.
