Tirana and Skopje make a mess of Sofia and Brussels. Three of the six leaders of the Western Balkans declared the possibility of refusing to step down, which added to fears of a failed European summit but also pressure on Bulgaria.
This was felt this Wednesday in Sofia, when after the Bulgarian Prime Minister went to Brussels, his government was overthrown in Parliament. But after that there is not necessarily bad news.
The first messages of a possible co-operation and coalition appear to have been exchanged between Brussels and Sofia, ousted Prime Minister and opposition Borisov.
This has paradoxically increased the chances that the veto on Northern Macedonia and consequently on Albania will fall by tomorrow, when Bulgaria can dawn with a new government. Tomorrow, when the official summit is held, the chances increase that Albania and Northern Macedonia will receive the date of the opening of negotiations and the European Union will not be ashamed in this first diplomatic clash with the three countries of the Open Balkans. And in the end everyone comes out happy.
Albania, Northern Macedonia, Bulgaria and the leaders of the European Union. But everything will depend on the developments in Sofia. At a meeting of Bulgaria’s parliament after the fall of his government, Prime Minister Petkov said he would now go to Brussels and declare that parliament did not approve the lifting of the veto.
At this moment, the opposition leader Borisov intervened and demanded the acceleration of the procedures to vote on the French proposal because the parliament is continuing its work. Borisov had previously stated opposition support for lifting the veto
“Nothing is closed until 12 noon on Thursday because the political forces in the Bulgarian opposition are trying to meet the deadlines and for their country to lift its veto on Northern Macedonia. “Meanwhile, Bulgaria is expected to have a new government within a week,” Borisov said.
If the opening is approved, on Friday in Brussels, the first intergovernmental meeting between Albania and the European Commission can take place, which will take Albania to another difficult but safe stage towards integration into the European Union.
