The Bronx Zoo in New York announced yesterday with joy that for the first time since 2008 three cubs of the rare tree kangaroo species have been born in the garden, who have already started looking out of their mother’s pocket.
“It’s an exciting birth of the Bronx Zoo and a unique opportunity for people to see some of nature’s most unique adaptations,” zoo director Jim Breheny said in a press release.
The three kangaroo cubs will stay in their natural incubation for only six weeks and are then expected to emerge from the mother’s marsupial pocket, the garden announcement said.
Officials added that the successful birth came as a result of collaboration in the breeding program between gardens and aquariums who have exchanged individual animals to maintain genetic diversity and demographic stability of populations.
An adult tree kangaroo weighs about 12 kg, not including their large tail.
The ‘Matschie’ tree kangaroo is also known as the Huon tree kangaroo and originates from the Huon Peninsula in Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Ocean, which is one of only three countries where tree kangaroos come from. 14 of their species also inhabit Australia and Indonesia.
The puppy name in the photo has not been announced but can be visited at the JungleWorld Zoo exhibition.
