Two journalists were shot dead and then burned alive by gangs in Haiti while reporting on insecurity in the capital.

Amady John Wesley, a Radio Écoute FM reporter, died along with Wilguens Louissaint when members of the ‘Ti Makak’ gang attacked them yesterday in the Petion-Ville area of the capital Port-au-Prince.

The two deceased had come to the area together with a third journalist who had managed to escape, to report on the fight between the gangs in the area.

Radio outcoute, based in Canada, told the network CNN that gang members had shot them with guns and then burned them alive.

“We condemn in the strongest terms this barbaric and criminal act,” said Francky Attis, general manager of Radio Ecoute FM.

His statement denounced the grave attack on the lives of journalists practicing their free profession in the country.

Haiti, the nation of the Kaibas that shares the island of Espaniolia with the Dominican Republic, has long been in turmoil and economic hardship, especially after the devastating 2010 earthquake that killed thousands and destroyed most of the capital.

In July last year, the country’s president Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in his official residence, which is suspected of his political enemies and foreign interference.

Amid the lack of order, criminal gangs have flourished that already control part of the country’s infrastructure.

The territorial war in Port-au-Prince has started between the poorest areas and has spread to the rich areas of the capital and the suburbs.

Haiti has registered 950 hostages in 2021, according to the country’s human rights think tank.

Haiti police are unarmed and well equipped, despite organized gangs.

In March last year 12 police officers were killed in a robbery attempt in a troubled area of Port-au-Prince.

The murder in 2000 of the most famous local journalist Jean Dominique, still remains unsolved.

In June 2021, journalist Diego Charles was killed along with an opposition activist and 13 other people. The perpetrators have not yet been identified by the authorities.
