Russian President Vladimir Putin is reported to be in Iran today, on his second trip abroad since the start of the invasion of Ukraine in late February.
Putin met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in Tehran today and will later meet with the country’s supreme leader, as well as with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who is also in Tehran.
The agenda of the meetings is believed to be wheat export, Syria and the war in Ukraine.
The visit is considered a chance to deepen ties with Iran, one of Russia’s few international allies, writes the British state network BBC.
The developments come after news that Iran may sell Russia cheap combat drones for the conflict in Ukraine.
A little earlier, Russian energy giant Gazprom also signed a $40 million cooperation agreement with the Iranian oil company.
After the meeting with Raisi, Putin said that the relations between Iran and Russia are developing “at a fast pace”.
Analysts say the Kremlin is trying to show that Western sanctions have failed to isolate Russia, the world’s largest country, and that some of its friends remain loyal.
However, the BBC writes that Turkey and Iran, in addition to being allies, are also enemies of Russia. Turkey and Russia have supported opposite sides in the Syrian war, and recently Turkey’s combat drones have been used extensively by Ukraine’s military. As Iran competes with Russia in global energy markets.
Turkey has rejected Western sanctions against Moscow, while Erdogan is trying to play the role of mediator.
