On Friday an appeals court again gave it the legal force to enforce a nationwide mandatory vaccination or testing order for COVID-19 affecting large businesses.
The order affects 80 million American employees and applies to businesses with at least 100 employees. The ruling prompted his opponents to turn to the Supreme Court seeking its intervention. About a month ago, a lower court decided to block the order.
President Joe Biden made the decision public in September with the aim of boosting vaccination rates as a way to fight the pandemic, which has so far caused more than 750,000 deaths and damaged the economy. The decision comes at a time when US public health officials are preparing for a wave of coronavirus infections as the more contagious variant of Omicron is spreading rapidly around the world.
“We are disappointed with the court ruling, but we will continue to fight against this illegal order in the Supreme Court,” South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson wrote in a Twitter post. “We are confident he will be blocked.” Within hours of the ruling, at least three appeals were filed with the Supreme Court, asking it to block the order immediately.
One of the first appeals to the Supreme Court was filed by a group of businesses, representing retail and wholesale businesses, warehousing, transportation, travel industry and logistics equipment. In their complaint it was stated among other things that the employees were ready to leave work just to not get the vaccine. “Such a thing will destroy the already fragile supply chains and labor markets during the holiday season,” the complaint said./VOA
