US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried, accompanied by DASH Special Envoy for the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar and Ambassador Yuri Kim, spent 60 minutes with Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Two American servicemen were also part of the American delegation, which suggests that in this meeting with Rama, security issues were also discussed.
From what the Prime Minister said after the meeting, EU integration was one of the main issues discussed.
“We discussed extensively the positive progress of reforms, the strengthening of justice, strategic investments in energy, Bulgaria’s veto on Northern Macedonia, the situation in the region, as well as the full support that the United States gives to the Open Balkans.”
At the end of Karen Donfried’s meetings in Tirana, the American embassy said that “The war in Ukraine has made EU integration even more urgent. “Both sides reaffirmed their strong support for EU membership talks for Albania and Northern Macedonia and their commitment to working with Albanian partners on justice reform and EU integration.”
Karen Donfried’s visit to Tirana was preceded on Thursday by a statement by Prime Minister Rama on integration, from where he hoped that the Americans would wake up their European partners and continue with enlargement.
“We have a full synergy and the United States, through their respective figures, is in a process to push forward the official opening of negotiations for Albania and Northern Macedonia,” Rama said.
This American synergy was witnessed the night before when the US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Karen Donfried, met in Tirana with the EU Enlargement Commissioner, Oliver Varhelyi.
“They agreed that the unjustified invasion of Ukraine by Russia has made integration even more urgent. They discussed the joint priority of the integration of Albania and Northern Macedonia into the European Union and Assistant Secretary Donfried reaffirmed the strong support of the United States for Albania’s membership in the European Union.
