Authorities in the US announced today the discovery of a sophisticated drug trafficking tunnel, equipped with a rail system and electricity near the US-Mexico border, near California.
The underpass discovered over the weekend is about 800 feet long and connects the Mexican city of Tijuana with a warehouse near Otay Mesa in San Diego, federal officials announced.
The tunnel also has ventilation systems and reinforced walls. It is located at a depth of more than 20 meters and is 1.3 meters wide.
As part of the reconnaissance operation, 700 kg of cocaine, 80 kg of methamphetamine and about 2 kg of heroin were reportedly seized.
Six people arrested were charged with cocaine and heroin trafficking, authorities said.
Officials said the discovery was made after vehicles stopped and entered suspiciously from the warehouse and a house near it, in which various drugs had been found.
When they raided the warehouse they found no drugs but discovered the tunnel entrance to the concrete floor, he told federal prosecutors.
“There is no light at the end of the narcotics tunnel,” said US prosecutor Randy Grossman ironically. “We will destroy every underground trafficking route to stop the arrival of illegal drugs in our communities,” he added.
It is not yet clear how the underground passage was used but this is not the first time traffickers have dug such tunnels.
January 2020 was the last time U.S. authorities announced the discovery of a tunnel also about 800 feet long from Tijuana toward San Diego.
