Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias visited Tirana with the aim of improving and intensifying Albanian-Greek bilateral relations, especially to take the dispute over the maritime border dispute to the Hague tribunal.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Olta Xhaçka, in addition to issues related to social protection, social security, learning the Albanian language, and the consular ones, expressed the readiness to solve the problem of the maritime border between the two countries.
“We reconfirmed our willingness to seek a compromise to refer the matter to a third party, such as the International Court of Justice. We believe and hope that constructiveness and good will to seek a mutually acceptable solution to an issue as difficult as maritime space. “Said Xhaçka
Nikos Dendias demanded the advancement of the preparation of the documentation to be sent to the Hague tribunal.
“Fulfilling this procedure is of special importance to us. And both countries want to resolve our differences on the basis of international law and mainly maritime law. I think that beyond the importance it has for our two countries, it also sends a very important message to all other countries that this is the right way and the right way to resolve our divergences. “And it is important that we speed up the steps to complete the technical part in order to submit the documents to the Hague Tribunal as soon as possible.” – said Dendias
If in the past the Cham issue was taboo for Albanian diplomacy, it is not for Minister Olta Xhacka.
“Our friendly countries can start discussions on other issues, no matter how difficult we have inherited from the history and tragic period of World War II, such as the need to repeal the Law of War, or the issue of property rights and the human rights of the Cham community, ”said Xhaçka.
Greece has already realized and accepted that the Greek law of war does not do them any honor in the context of the time in which we live.
“Our relations have developed very well, and even the abrogation of the law of war is something we must break away from and we must cooperate here so that the historic points for its abrogation are concluded as soon as possible. Of course I want to be honest with you, that means we have to discuss practical issues, issues that have to do with the Greek side and that they have to discuss. And we think that things are not fixed as intended.
In Tirana, the Greek Foreign Minister also met with Prime Minister Edi Rama but not President Meta or the new leadership of the Democratic Party.
