U.S. Department of Defense spokesman John Kirby on Thursday released several U.S. intelligence analyzes arguing that Russia was preparing a fake video to use as a pretext to justify its invasion of Ukraine.
In the video, US intelligence says that a fake attack by the Ukrainian army would be shown against targets on Russian territory, or against Russian-speaking people who are in areas of Ukraine where Russian influence is even stronger.
The Russian government wants the published images to show violent scenes, explosions, corpses and destroyed buildings, all of these images would be false, but with the intention of creating outrage among the people and using this anger as a strong argument for the occupation of Ukrainian territory.
Since the information was gathered by the intelligence services, the conclusions drawn by Kirby must be taken very carefully, even if they are judged for the most part to be credible.
As it is not yet clear what the Russian president wants to do, Vladimir Putin and many analysts have been asking for weeks about his true intentions, but without revealing any correct and definitive answer.
Some US officials, quoted by the New York Times, said that at the moment nothing is known for sure who is preparing the video, although there are doubts about Russian military intelligence (also known as GRU). Ned Price, a US State Department spokesman, added that the United States has decided to uncover Russia’s alleged plan to persuade the Russian government not to implement it in practice.
The plan of a false pretext to attack Ukraine was also confirmed to the New York Times by a British intelligence official.
Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded Thursday evening to accusations leveled by the US, categorically denying the existence of such a plan, while stressing that it is not the first time Russia has been accused of such false things.
Russia’s ambassador to the European Union, Vladimir Chizhov, maintained the same line, telling CNN that his country has no plans to invade Ukraine.
Meanwhile, efforts for a diplomatic solution to the crisis are virtually blocked.
The latest clash between Russia and the United States took place last Monday at the United Nations Security Council.
The meeting did not end well and representatives of both countries accused each other of wanting to fuel violence. The Russian ambassador, Vasily Nebenzya, got up and left when it was time for the Ukrainian ambassador to speak.
