35-year-old Elise Stevens had hired a personal bodyguard after she was terrified for the safety of herself and her daughter after leaving an abusive relationship, but eventually fell in love with the man who was protecting her.
Elise feared for the safety of herself and her 13-year-old daughter when she left her abusive ex-partner in November 2008.
A friend of hers suggested getting a ‘bodyguard’ so she hired the security services of 35-year-old Derek Stevens, with whom she had been in high school.
But the couple spent so much time together that Elise began to fall in love with him, more or less like in the movie with Whitney Houston, “The Bodyguard”.
As Derek became more and more part of the lives of Elise and daughter Gracie, the loving mother says she went so far as to give her an ultimatum – to stay in a relationship with her or break the protection contract.
Derek initially decided to break up, but reportedly admitted his love for Elise two weeks later.
In March 2009 they both married and now have two children together, Rhilynn, 11, and Trask, eight, who date 13-year-old Gracie.
“After being in an abusive relationship for so long, I never thought I would find love again,” said Elise, an autistic child specialist in Oregon, USA.
“I was proud to have people helping me and then I took Derek as a bodyguard. But I fell in love with him from the first moment I saw him. He makes me feel safe, calm and protected. “People ask me if I would change the violence I went through before, but from it I got to know Derek and the family I have now.”
The woman reveals that Derek had started to become a father figure to Gracie, so she had told him how she felt.
“I told her I loved her and wanted to be in a relationship with her. If he did not want to I asked him to leave as this would confuse my daughter. Initially he said he did not want a relationship and left, I got very angry. “But after two weeks he got on the phone and said he had changed his mind.”
As Derek said: “I loved her from the beginning but we were young and I knew that if I said ‘yes’ I would not know another woman.”
The couple started dating for two weeks and decided to get married.
They married on March 13, 2009, and immediately started trying for a baby. The woman says she suffered several miscarriages initially but then their two children were born.
