Keith Papini had been briefly suspected of the disappearance of his wife Sherri Papini, but submitted the divorce papers shortly after the woman admitted the truth about the “horror” of the hostage-taking she had staged herself.
Sherri Papini, is a mother from California who sparked an extensive police search operation in 2016 when she had staged hostage-taking.
After pleading guilty, Papini says he is “deeply” ashamed of what he has done and has been accused of postal fraud, perjury against FBI for which he faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.
Prosecutors say she received $ 30,000 from the California Victims Compensation Fund.
“I will work all my life to make up for what I did,” she said after the strange event.
During the three weeks that his wife was missing Keith Papini had made constant appeals for information and was investigating himself as a suspect by the police.
Papini had disappeared as he ran out in November 2016. Her cellphone and shin headphones were later found on the street along with pieces of Papini’s hair in them.
After the police investigation it started to be understood that Papini’s disappearance had quite a discrepancy and consequently it was revealed that she was staying with ex-boyfriend James Reyes.
The strange “hostage-taking” ended on November 24, 2016 when police received a call for help from a woman left in the middle of the street.
“Papini had a chain tied in the middle and an arm and ankles connected to each other,” wrote the case agent Agent Lantto.
“She seemed to have lost a lot of weight and her hair was cut in a messy short style.”
“Papini had a swollen nose and some scratches on his face and other parts of his body,” he added.
the woman further testified in her testimony to police that she had been abducted by two Mexican women who had held her hostage. She had even helped detectives create a drawing of the alleged kidnappers, which she said they wanted to exploit or sell as sex scales.
But the FBI revealed the secrets of the story when it interrogated her ex-boyfriend who collaborated with them by telling them how Papini complained that she was being abused by her husband.
When Papini finally admitted the kidnapping fraud, it seems it was also the border crossing for Keith Papini, who filed the petition to end the marriage.
They were married in 2009 and have two children together, Tyler, eight, and Violet, 10.
