19 European countries are on alert for extreme fire danger, in an area stretching from Portugal and Spain in the southwest to Albania and Turkey in the southeast, according to the European Forest Fire Information System.
As Europe’s heat wave moves east, wildfires have forced tens of thousands of people from their homes, blanketing parts of Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Greece with smoke.
While Germany, Hungary and Italy have been hit with high temperatures of more than 38 degrees.
Today marked some relief for the UK, where temperatures fell from an all-time high of 40.3C on Tuesday.
But several residential areas around London were left in ruins as fires ripped through different parts of the capital, plunging the fire service into a crisis not seen since the second world war.
But the scorching heat isn’t just scorching Europe. In the United States, authorities are urging caution as a heat wave that shows no signs of slowing is scorching the south-central regions of the country.
Even in China, millions of densely populated cities are experiencing the extreme heat. According to the China Meteorological Administration, at least 31 Chinese cities issued the second-highest orange alert warning, with temperatures expected to reach 37 degrees Celsius in the next 24 hours.
