The festivities, the red carpet and the mess that gave the Berlinales no charm, faded significantly during the pandemic period.
But the organizers of the International Film Festival have decided to challenge the coronavirus this time, opening the doors of its 72nd edition.
The film festival will open at the Berlinale Palace on Potsdamer Platz on Thursday evening with the new film by French director François Ozon: “Peter von Kant”.
A total of 18 films will be screened in the main competition. Which of them will deserve the trophy in the form of a bear, for this will be decided by a seven-member international jury, headed by producer, screenwriter and director M.
Night Shyamalan, says DW. The predominant theme in this Berlinale is love, explain the organizers, while life in the pandemic is almost not present at all.
Another feature is that the events take place mainly outside the cities, in the provinces, on trips or in the suburbs.
A total of 256 short and feature films will be presented, divided into several sections.
“Berlinale 2022” takes place despite the increasing number of Omicron infections, which has been criticized by many politicians in the country.
But the festival rules are strict: The duration of the competition is limited to six days.
The 2G plus rule will be applied in cinemas, therefore, entry is allowed only with a vaccination or cure certificate plus a negative antigen test, not older than 24 hours.
The FFP2 protective mask should be worn throughout the film, and cinemas will be at half capacity.
