For three days in a row, a massive forest fire spread dangerously near the coastal resort of Marmaris in Turkey; the flames spread to the same area that last year was hit by the worst fires in the country’s history.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, however, announced that the blasts, aided by the wind, in the Bördübet region, near Marmaris on the Aegean coast, burning some pine forests and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of residents, had been contained. Erdogan spoke after an inspection of the area, where the fires affected a forest area of nearly 4,000 hectares.
“Fortunately, these fires have been brought under control to a large extent. Reforestation efforts will begin as soon as possible. “We are happy above all that there was no loss of life and there are no reports of disappearances,” Erdogan said.
Due to the fires however, nearly 20 people ended up in hospital with various injuries. Authorities arrested a 34-year-old man who apparently confessed to lighting a fire after several disputes with family members. Erdogan favors harsh sentences for people detained for deliberate arson, and urges Turkey to open debate on reinstating the death penalty, which was removed in 2002.
