It is not yet clear the exact number of killer reptiles that have left the mass breeding farm, but officials spoke of figures ranging from “100 to 1,000”.
Crocodiles today made an alarming attempt for freedom from the commercial leather farm in South Africa, escaping from the plant in the Western Cape towards the Breede River.
Reports said that so far only 40 of them had recovered, and 27 had been killed.
The crocodile farm usually produces about 5,000 specimens a year, with an average length of 1.5 meters.
Petro van Rhyn, spokesman for the Cape Nature Nature Reserve said recovery teams were still counting the total number of escaped crocodiles.
“Is it 100 or 1,000? “We do not know that,” he said.
The official added that employees are trying to lure the departed animals with food to put them in cages but the technique has not been very successful as their prey is abundant in the river area.
Police and environmental officials said that by now the scary predators may have moved 4km in any direction from the point of departure.
Van Rhyn urged locals to be vigilant, though he added that attacks on people are very unlikely.
“Of course they are very dangerous. They are wild animals even though they lived indoors. “People should not approach them and stay away from the river until the capture is over.”
A statement from Camp Nature said: “Dense and overgrown vegetation on the river banks makes the recovery process difficult. Being nocturnal animals, catching crocodiles becomes even more difficult because they are more active at night. We and the partner groups had no choice but to euthanize the seven spotted crocodiles. “Crocodiles are animals originating from South Africa, but not from the Western Cape.”
