Hungary’s parliament today elected Katalin Novak, an ally of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, as the country’s first female president.
Novak, who served as minister of family policy, described her election as a victory for women.
She took the ceremonial post after 137 votes in favor and 51 against, in the parliament dominated by Prime Minister Orban’s right-wing Fidesz party.
“We women raise children, take care of the sick, work, clean and are everywhere,” Novak said in her pre-vote speech.
“We know the power of words but we also know how to remain silent and listen, we know how to protect the family, with more courage than men if needed.”
“Precisely because I am a woman I want to be a good president of Hungary,” said the 44-year-old, who also becomes Hungary’s youngest head of state.
Novak has represented the government on social policies such as rewards for families to have more children.
Today’s vote comes ahead of the crucial April 3rd parliamentary elections when Orban seeks a fourth term after coming to power in 2010.
