The terrorist who killed veteran MP Sir David Amess will die behind bars after being sentenced to life in prison.
Ali Harbi Ali, appeared in Old Bailey on Wednesday after being convicted of murder and terrorist acts. Sir David was stabbed more than 20 times during a meeting in Essex last October.
Judge Justice Sweeney said the killing of the Southend West MP “struck a chord with our democracy”. The judge said Sir David had done nothing and that his loss was of national importance.
Sweeney added that the murder was committed “to avenge the losses of the Islamic State in Syria “and that Sir David had” fought bravely “ against the attack.
“The defendant has no remorse or shame for what he did, but quite the opposite“, Said the judge.
In a statement after the sentencing, Sir David’s family said they felt no joy from Ali’s imprisonment and they would shed tears forever for the man they have lost.
“Our wonderful father was taken from us in a terrible and violent way. We will never get over this tragedy. How disgusting to think what happened next. It is beyond evil“, They said.
The British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, also reacted to this, saying that he welcomes the life sentence given to Ali.
“We will never allow those who commit evil deeds to triumph over democracy.”
He told the court he had not regretted the killing and that Sir David deserved to die because he had voted in parliament for airstrikes in Syria in 2014 and 2015.
Ali will join other lifers such as Thomas Mair, who killed Labor MP Jo Cox in 2016, and police officer Wayne Couzen, who raped and killed Sarah Everard in south London last year.
Prosecutors describe Ali as a “bloodthirsty” supporter of the Islamic State, who had spent years plotting to assassinate a lawmaker.
The 26-year-old had researched a number of possible high-profile political targets, including Michael Gove, Dominic Raab and Sir Keir Starmer, before settling on Sir David.
During the meeting with the politician, Ali said “I’m sorry”, took the knife out of his clothes and hit him constantly.
The so-called “lone wolf” terrorist had sent a message on WhatsApp to family and friends to justify the actions around the time of the attack. Sir David, 69, a father of five, has been an MP since 1983.
