A priest, a rabbi and an imam were among theologians hired by the US space agency NASA to examine how humanity would react if alien life were discovered on other planets, or even on Earth.
24 religious scholars have been recruited to participate in the special program of the Center for Theological Inquiry at Princeton University in New Jersey, USA.
The center has received a $ 1.1 million grant from NASA with the primary goal of “linking understanding” between academics of various disciplines, scientists and policy makers for what it called “global issues.”
The program seeks to assess how major religious beliefs would react to the existence of life beyond that of the earth, and how such a discovery might affect the concept of God and Creation.
Cambridge University religious researcher Reverend Dr. Andrew Davison, who also has a doctorate in chemistry from Oxford, is among the participants in the NASA-sponsored program.
Davison in his forthcoming book “Astrobiology and Christian Doctrine”, which is published this year, addresses the issue of the possibility of creating life by God on other planets, emphasizing that the possibility of introduction to alien life is becoming more and more real.
“Religious tradition is an important aspect of how such a revelation can affect incarnation,” Davidson wrote in a COMMENTARY on the University of Cambridge website.
After reading a copy of the book, The Times calculated that “in such a case a large number of people would seek explanations from their religion” for what it means to be an “alien life” or for the fact that what alien life means in relation to the “position and dignity of human life.”
“The discovery of alien life may come in a decade, for centuries or never, but whenever it happens, it would be good to think about the consequences in advance.”
Three other religious figures, such as the English bishop of Buckingham Alan Wilson, Rabbi Jonathan Romain of Maidenhead, and Imam Qari Asim of the Leeds mosque, have said that the teachings of major faiths will not be affected by the discovery of alien life, according to The Times./ TRTWorld /
