Police in northeastern Thailand have arrested a self-proclaimed holy man who, according to local media, ran a cult living in the woods and practiced ‘unacceptable’ customs by ‘modern civil society’.
Amid chaotic raid scenes, police raided the mud house of 75-year-old Thawee Nanra on Sunday in the jungle of Chaiyaphum province.
Supporters of the group shouted and tried to stop the police as the man with long white hair was escorted towards the vehicles.
Police later said they had found 11 bodies of people inside the tribal apartment, which local media said belonged to his dead followers.
Governor Kraisorn Kongchalad said Thawee had at least 15 followers with him. While in his house there were some scattered coffins and tools of tribal healing practices.
Believers told the media that cult members, among others, believed that human body fluids, such as urine or phlegm, could be used to treat disease.
Governor Kraisorn said he could not allow such practices to continue in the modern world.
“It’s horrible that these people believe in superstition, this is no longer a personal belief. “There are dead bodies that will be investigated.”
The population of Thailand is predominantly Buddhist but many people have other faiths outside the traditional religion.
Authorities in question said the group in question had existed for at least four years, hiding in the remote area of the forest.
They were discovered when the daughter of one of the followers of the faith had complained to a well-known figure about the discovery of “abusive” religious practices.
Thawee was charged with illegal residence in the state forest area, for illegal gatherings under the law of strict coronavirus health order.
