Vladimir Putin is horrified by the death of Libyan dictator Mummar Gaddafi.
The video of his last moments has turned into a nightmare for the head of the Kremlin, who fears that the West wants to reserve the same end for him, says Bulgarian political scientist Ivan Krastev for Corriere della Sera.
“Putin spent hours watching Gaddafi capture and then assassinate him. This tells us something about the fluctuations of his apocalyptic humor. “It is clear that he identifies with Gaddafi,” Krastev said. “He is so afraid that he will not end up as the Libyan leader, as he is ready for everything“, The journalist asks.
The political scientist underlines that there is a detail which we are “underestimating”, as he puts it. In 2011, Obama managed to persuade Moscow to support the operation in Libya, telling him that it would only be a no-fly zone, and that regime change was not intended.
“But then things went the way they did.” And Putin, he says, is already convinced that no matter what he does, the West always wants regime change, and that scares him. Bloomberg recently wrote that if the war continues, and Ukraine’s fierce resistance to Russian occupation continues, Putin could issue new threats with the use of nuclear weapons as they could deplete human resources and military equipment to invade the neighboring country.
