Inter vice-president Javier Zanetti believes that although his role at the club and lifestyle have changed dramatically from his days as a footballer, he still has as strong a connection to the black as ever.
Speaking to InterTV for the “Career” series, the former captain and current vice president explained what Inter has meant to him over the years.
Zanetti spent nearly two decades as an Inter player, making around a thousand appearances for the club and captaining most of those matches.
The Argentine certainly left his mark on the pitch, but he continues to lead the club in a leadership role, having served as vice-president since 2014, without interruption.
“Life is different now, but I enjoy it because I am still always connected to Inter. I do everything with passion, there are no personal interests”.
Zanetti looked back on his first day as an Inter player, calling it a “beautiful memory.
I met a great man, Giacinto Facchetti, who built the history of the club”, he continued. – “It was my first time in Italy, this photo represents the beginning of my career at Inter. It was my first time wearing a suit. In Argentina we only wore costumes for big parties. When I found out that Inter had bought me, I had to buy a suit that cost a lot.”
About the legendary former captain, Facchetti, Zanetti said: “Talking about Giacinto makes me very emotional, since I met him I knew he was a wonderful person. His presence at Appiano inspired respect in all. I miss him so much, I will always have a fond memory of him.”
Zanetti also spoke about the former captain of Milan and the current sports director of the “Devil”, Paolo Maldini:
“I have always admired him. There has always been a great relationship on and off the pitch. A genuine person, very respectful. We played a lot of derbies and he defended his shirt and the history of his club as I did mine, but I still have a great friendship with him.”
Regarding his most formidable opponents, Zanetti said: “I have played against great players, Roberto Baggio is the one that comes to mind. I also have a good friendship with him, we became very close when he came to Inter. As an opponent, it has never been easy to face him. Then I think about Zidane, Ryan Giggs, Lionel Messi, who I faced in the Champions League. But beyond what they can do on the field, they are all wonderful people.”
