Russian President Vladimir Putin signed this Monday a decree to simplify the process of obtaining Russian citizenship for all residents of Ukraine.
The decree stipulates that “citizens of Ukraine, the Donetsk People’s Republic or the Luhansk People’s Republic and stateless people living permanently in Ukraine have the right to appeal for admission to the citizenship of the Russian Federation through a simplified procedure in accordance with the Law on the Citizenship of the Russian Federation“, says the decree.
What the simplified process allows: Individuals can apply for Russian citizenship without meeting certain requirements, including living in Russia for five years, having a source of income and passing a Russian language exam.
The previous decree was for residents in the self-proclaimed People’s Republic of Donetsk and Luhansk, as well as the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine.
