The President of Indonesia will organize the first possible meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin since the beginning of the war.
Indonesia is currently chairing the Group of 20 (G20) major economies and its president Joko Widodo has invited Zelenskyy and Putin to the leaders’ summit in November.
After that, he faced pressure from Western countries to expel the Russian leader, but said the goal was to “unite” the G20.
Jokowi, recently spoke with Zelensky and rejected a request for weapons for Ukraine, while the foreign policy of the Southeast Asian country tries to maintain strategic neutrality.
In an online statement, Jokowi said he hoped “the war could end soon and peaceful solutions could be forged through negotiations.”
Ukraine is not a member of the G20, but guest countries are allowed to be invited.
Jokowi said Putin would attend, but the Kremlin said that had not yet been decided. Zelensky’s presence is not yet known.
