The Taliban have banned the broadcasting of BBC and VOA news editions in the Afghan media, further restricting freedoms in the country.
The BBC also reported on Sunday, March 27 that multilingual news editions had been removed from broadcast in Afghanistan.
The move came after the Taliban ordered BBC TV partners, including local TV stations Shamshad, Ariana and Arezo, to remove international broadcasters from their airwaves.
Meanwhile, a source in the Afghan media giant ‘MOBY Group’ told the DPA news agency that it had stopped broadcasting VOA material since Sunday, following orders from the Taliban intelligence agency.
Earlier, Ministry of Information and Culture spokesman Abdul Haq Hammad confirmed to DPA that VOA television broadcasts on Afghan channels had been suspended.
The Taliban official said that culturally and politically, VOA television was in conflict with government policies.
The Taliban recently arrested 11 media workers, including three TOLOnews employees, following a ban on foreign soap operas.
After the Taliban returned to power, many Afghan journalists fled. Numerous media outlets were shut down, mainly due to economic problems.
Meanwhile, many journalists still in Afghanistan no longer feel able to report openly, for fear of retaliation by the Taliban. Many of them have been imprisoned or tortured in the course of their work./ REL
