Numerous rocket attacks took place today in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, marking the largest attack to date in the city, where at least one person was killed and three others were injured.
Ukrainian officials say Russia has assembled three of its battalion groups in Vasylivka about 50 km (30 miles) south of the city, but it is not yet clear if they plan to launch an offensive in Zaporizhzhia.
The area is important because it is a major transportation hub, especially for railways. It is home to many heavy industry including a steel plant and several defense companies, including the Motor Sich plant which produces engines for aircraft and helicopters that the Russians claim have hit and a radar manufacturer.
Earlier in the conflict, many people from Mariupol left for the city, which until now was thought to have been relatively safe.
Zaporizhia is also close to the site of a nuclear power plant, which is the largest in Europe, on the south bank of the Dnieper River.
Russian troops are occupying the pervasive area and while Ukrainian staff is operating it, the Russians have sent their nuclear experts to monitor their work.
Normally, the power plant generates more than half of Ukraine’s nuclear power and 20% of the country’s total electricity supply.
