The United States is closely following Serbia’s moves. Christopher Hill, the nominee for the post of next US ambassador to Serbia, described as worrying the fact that Belgrade is turning to Russia and China for weapons, although he added that there is no lack of willingness to help the country resist malicious influences, including from Russia and China.
“It is particularly disturbing to see Serbia, for example, seeking to make military purchases – which they see as necessary at the moment they are trying to have a first-class army – and it is quite disturbing that they are turning to Russia for this. And it is also disturbing to see that they are looking from China for some of their infrastructure needs“, Said Hill.
“We have to be prepared to show them (Serbia) that we offer a better model, we offer better alternatives for them,” he said, adding that this is what he intends to do as ambassador if confirmed.
Hill, a diplomat with long experience related to the Balkans, was appointed to the post by President Joe Biden in October.
Prior to retiring from the State Department in 2010, he served as US Ambassador to Iraq, Korea, Poland and Macedonia, as Assistant Secretary of State for East and Pacific Affairs, and as Head of US Delegation to the Talks. for North Korea, while he was the first diplomatic representative of the United States in Albania, after 45 years of isolation.
