Kluge said the main cause for the increase in likely cases is the BA2 variant, which according to experts is about 30 percent more contagious, but not more dangerous, than the previous variant BA1.
But, “these states are brutally removing restrictions, going from many measures to less,” he said.
According to WHO data, the number of new cases of coronavirus has fallen in Europe, after the peak reached in late January, but there has been an increase in cases in early March.
Over 5.1 million cases and 12,496 deaths have been registered in the European region over the past week, the WHO said. In total, almost 194.4 million cases and over 1.92 million deaths have been recorded since the beginning of the pandemic.
