Faced with the rise of Covid 19 infections during the winter season, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced Friday that masks should be kept in all closed public places unless businesses or institutions require vaccination.
Governor Hochul said the decision to impose an obligation on masks was based on the state’s weekly rate of Covid 19 cases, as well as the increase in hospital admissions.
The mask requirement applies to both customers and staff and will be in effect from December 13 to January 15, after which the state will reassess the situation.
“As governor, my two top priorities are protecting the health of New Yorkers and protecting the health of our economy.Said Ms. Hochul in a press release. “The interim measures I am taking today will help achieve these goals during the holiday season“.
Some states already have the obligation to wear the mask, including New Mexico, Nevada and Hawaii.
New York registered more than 68,000 positive tests for the virus in the seven-day period ending Dec. 8. This is the highest weekly increase since the beginning of February.
“I have been warning for weeks that additional steps may be needed and now we are at that point based on three parameters: Increased cases, capacity in hospitals and insufficient vaccination rates in certain areas.Said Governor Hochul.
